Safe Disposal of Aerosol Cans

9/7/2017

Please be aware that the following items cannot be collected with recycling for safety reasons:

  • Aerosol cans (hairspray, spray paint, shaving cream, canned air, Silly String, cooking sprays, cleaning sprays, spray sunblock, insect sprays, etc.)
  • Propane tanks
  • Oxygen tanks
  • Helium tanks
  • Any pressurized container

These pressurized containers are a safety concern both at the landfill and at the recycling center, as most contents are highly flammable.

What should you do with them instead?

  • Aerosol cans: dispose of cans in the trash after ensuring that they are empty.
  • Propane and oxygen tanks: return them to the fill station. These should never be put in trash or recycling.
  • Pressurized containers: ensure that the container is empty and that the valve is removed before disposal in the trash.

Please help us keep our employees safe by adhering to proper disposal of aerosol cans, propane tanks, oxygen tanks and other pressurized containers.
