Can You Put Medical Syringes in the Trash?

9/4/2018

Medical syringes and lancets are medical wastes known as "sharps." Sharps can be very dangerous to those who are handling residential waste. With our drivers' safety in mind, here are the rules for placing insulin syringes in the trash.

Syringes used at home can be recapped and placed into a heavy-duty plastic container with the lid taped on and placed into the trash.

Examples of strong plastic bottles include sharps containers, detergent bottles, or mayonnaise jars. Do not use water bottles or soda bottles, as these plastics are thin and can be easily punctured.

Never put loose sharps into trash or recycling containers. Medical waste from a home should always be placed into the trash. For more information on how to properly dispose of medical sharps, visit https://safeneedledisposal.org/state-search/.

Thank you for helping keep our drivers safe!
